These glass lamps are known in India as Handis or Hundis named after a cooking pot. Rather surprisingly they are not Indian, but European in origin. They were exported to India as lighting for large homes and palaces in the 19th Century. Candles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling of the palace or the tent. Many survived on the tall ceilings
